My 2xGreat Grandparents' Home at Denchworth

Maria Alder (nee Moss) holding Arthur and Lucy Alder's baby (who are both in the foreground with Martha Alder)... at Ivy Cottage.

My Grandfather Centre Back in Royal Marines' Uniform, his Parents Seated, Outside their Pub 'The Cricketers' Enfield, Brother Bob in front C 1915

(above) Percy William Alder (born 1897 Enfield) he with the hat at a jaunty angle!  Seated are his parents William Alder born 1873 Denchworth and Annie Simmons born 1870 Great Canfield, and their youngest son Albert Henry 'Bob' Alder born 1903 Enfield.  'The Cricketers' later became a more fancy affair than it was when Bill and Annie were running it - Dad said it was just a ground floor building.

Granddad joined the Royal Marines Light Infantry at the age of 16 (he lied about his age!), he served at Ostend, Dunkirk, the defence of Antwerp, and was in an expeditionary force to the Dardanelles.

Below is Percy William Alder (left) and his brother Bob....

above .....William Alder (in the centre of photo) and Annie Simmons on 'their land' down Parsonage Lane, Enfield (they lived at number 74).  William was a 'general dealer' on the census, I think he was a bit of an entrepreneur ... he sold milk, ran a 'pub' (The Cricketers in Enfield) and had pigs (poor things).  In fact my father's cousin Stuart tells me that he was called 'Piggy Alder'.  The family story goes that he lost his money through a court battle over a friend's Will, but I have yet to find any paper trail to support this.

and William Alder with his Jack Russell...

Annie Simmons (I think I've got her eyes), pity that the front half of her horse is missing....
